Accidents are Inevitable
Insurance data indicates the average driver will be involved in three or four car accidents in his lifetime. Moments after a car crash, you may feel fear, anxiety, and, possibly, pain. It is important to know what to do when a car crash happens. When you are involved in a car accident, follow these steps to ensure your rights are protected.
1) Check for Injury
If you are injured, seek medical attention immediately. Even if you believe your injuries are minor or will get better with time, you may be want to go to a doctor, so you can know for sure.
2) Move off the Highway
Unless it is impossible to do so, motorists are subject to a fine if they are involved in a traffic accident and fail to remove their vehicle from the roadway. Move your vehicle to the shoulder after a minor accident and turn on your hazard lights.
3) Stay at the Accident Scene
After a car accident, North Carolina law requires motorists to exchange insurance information if they can. If you are able, obtain the insurance “exchange slip” from each driver involved in the wreck. Exchange slips contain important insurance information that you will need later.
4) Contact Police
If you suffer any injuries or believe another motorist was driving while impaired at the time of the accident, contact the police immediately. After the police arrive, obtain all available information from the investigating officer.
5) Check for Damage
If you can do so safely, examine your vehicle for damage while you are at the collision scene. Also, take pictures of the damage to your car and the accident scene. If you cannot take pictures at the scene of the collision, then do so as soon as possible.
6) Contact an Experienced Attorney
